This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Picasso said, "every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up". With standardized testing the main focus of educational budgets, art is slowly diminishing from our schools. We want to continue to give our students opportunities to show their creativity.
My school is located in an area of low economic development.
Most students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Most of our students come from homes where Spanish is the primary language. These students are not always given the same opportunities as students from more affluent areas. We have a GT class on every grade level from K-2 for bilingual students as well as English speakers. These children adore learning about famous artists and creating their own "vision". We started a club on Saturdays last year strictly for art and had a number of students gladly give up part of their weekend to participate.
My Project
We are going to start an Art Club at our school this upcoming school year. One day a week after school students will be immersed in Picasso, Miro, Vermeer and Van Gogh. They will learn techniques of painting and sculpture and then be given hands-on opportunities to create their own masterpieces. Through this children who may not be stellar readers or mathematicians will be successful in whatever they create. They will be given the opportunity week after week to be creative and express themselves through all different mediums of art.
Art inspires children.
It inspires them to learn more about the past and envision a future where they can be the inventors, creators, designers. We ask children to be creative in their writing for testing, but never really give them opportunities to explore what that means. By supporting this proposal you would give kids the chance to really succeed and be proud of what they can create. Not to mention allow them to have fun getting their hands dirty a little bit! Thank you!
