My Students
My students are in the third and fifth grades, are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and attend a public school for students with disabilities in Brooklyn, NY.
Our students are a diverse group of learners who continuously push themselves to enhance their social and academic skills.
My students find it difficult to comprehend concepts without having tangible and visual representations of what is being discussed. Much of the academic progress made by my students is due to the use of engaging learning activities composed of tactile elements.
Educators are making use of a plethora of strategies to keep students learning content on their level during blended learning, including printed work packets, virtual books and worksheets, pre-recorded lessons, live video lessons, and virtual conferences. Our students are continuously adapting and developing their academic and social skills as they adjust to learning in a virtual classroom.
My Project
"Reading is a discount ticket to everywhere.” – Mary Schmich
With these Lakeshore literacy resources, my students will have the chance to experience literacy learning in a fun and engaging form.
Each of the centers listed covers critical foundational skills our learners are working towards mastering this school year. Due to social distancing, my students will not have the opportunity to complete centers in pairs or groups. However, working alone with these centers will still bring excitement. These literacy materials are also excellent due to their versatility and design, which will pique my students' increased level of interest in engaging activities presented in various modalities that target different intelligences. In addition to this, the centers can be easily sanitized at the end of class or during class for another student to use, which will limit the amount of time spent cleaning and increase the amount of time students can spend learning and having fun. These materials will also be an engaging addition to the live lessons students will be partaking in while remote learning.
As educators, our goal is to continue to modify the learning environment to meet our students' social, emotional, and health needs during these unprecedented times and always. Building my students' literacy levels is essential in developing their communication skills and fostering their love for learning. With these new targeted resources, my students can become lifelong learners with a solid understanding of foundational reading and writing skills.
