Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students enter the classroom every morning, ready and eager to learn. No longer are the days of playing house and sandbox all day in kindergarten. These students are bursting with great potential to be our future leaders. They consist of mostly English language learners that attend a low socioeconomic school where over 75 % of our families qualify for free breakfast and lunch. This can present challenges but also creates wonderful opportunities. In my classroom, we learn together and from each other.
They have the most caring hearts and an incredible capacity to learn while taking on challenging lessons, classroom responsibilities, and building friendships.
They have already grown so much in these first 5 weeks of school that it is not hard to believe these children will grow to be our best and brightest future. I am so grateful to be a part of their first step in the love of learning in our wonderful public school.
My Project
Most of my students are entering kindergarten with no preschool skills. They will grow from knowing no letters sounds to fully reading by the end of kindergarten. We have long hard working days and little time for truly playing. I have created many tools out of paper for my students to build and explore the alphabet and word building. We have a few worn out puzzles and letter kits that are the joy of our classroom. I am hoping to build a set of 12 rotating centers that students can visit during the week.
Young students learn best through play and exploration.
Providing many different tools to work with allows them to engage in meaningful letter exploration. This will lead to word building while moving and wiggling to get out extra energy.
