Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students use American Sign Language as their primary language. Few students have full access to full communication at home, meaning that their time at school is crucial. We have the challenge and responsibility of connecting students and parents who do not necessarily use the same language. With many families that are use Spanish at home, some don't even write the same language.
My students are third and fourth graders at a Title I school in East LA.
They are bused in up to two hours to our school from all over LA in order to provide full support and access in our "Total Communication" program.
Physical Education is an area where all my students are able to interact with their grade level general education peers on an equal playing field. However, our school is severely lacking in equipment when our students mix with their peers to support development in grade level standards.
My Project
For many of my students, PE is their first chance to experience mainstreaming with their general education peers.
Collaboration with the general education classes for PE provides the ability to learn the skills to play sports and engage in a game.
We need equipment to work with mixed classes, as we currently borrow from limited recess equipment. The volleyball and badminton sets will allow us to teach students to play sports that are new and exciting. We don't have grassy areas for PE, which means we have to carefully choose the games we play and anticipate issues with contact sports. The nets set up in multiple areas will enable us to practice hand-eye coordination skills in actual games rather than only teach foundational skills in isolation. Students will learn to play sports that require racquets, which is a first for most of our students.
Teamwork is the goal and this new equipment gives us a unique opportunity. No matter the classroom, our students will be able to work together in this new experience.
