Playing Head Games!

My students need headphones to listen to instructions on websites when they are in the computer lab with peers. The head phones need to have volume control to meet sensory needs of those with Autism.

My Students

All my students want is to fit in and have friends! My classroom has students with moderate to severe intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or Autism. The students are in a self-contained classroom. They enjoy all the things that their peers enjoy. They are teenagers after all! Most of the students come from low socio-economic areas in Charleston and do not have the luxury of having computers at home. They look forward to the days that they go to the computer lab with their peers and can participate in computer-based activities. The activities the students do require sound and they are not comfortable with ear buds. Sensory needs get in the way of inserting a small bud in the ear.

My Project

My students have moderate to severe intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or Autism. They absolutely LOVE going to the computer lab with the peers and working on reading and math websites. Due to sensory needs of the students, they need over the ear head phones that allow volume control. They also need these head phones to hear the directions on the lessons they are working on. The students have tried ear buds, but sensory needs did not allow them to feel comfortable with small buds in their ears. Two students also have ears that do not allow the fit of an ear bud. All of their peers are wearing over the ear head phones or ear buds when in the lab. My students just want to fit in and be like everyone else.
