My Project

A lot of our students suffer from multiple adverse childhood experiences. This trauma has negatively shaped their childhood. Science tells us that too many of these events can change a child's cognitive abilities, leads to mental illness, they are more likely to engage in risk seeking behaviors, and are more likely to have children that will experience similar adverse childhood experiences. No child deserves this. Science has also shown that one way to help students with traumatic pasts, is to connect them with an adult who cares and with others they can feel connected with. To find that person, our school is creating an 8th hour for clubs. Every student will be able to choose a club and will go to that club once a week. Each teacher chose the club they wanted to lead. I chose a Board Game Club.

Playing games allows students to form new connections, disconnect from technology, feel less isolated, reduces stress, enhance critical thinking skills, and promotes healthy competition.

Most of my students have played Uno, Battleship, Chess, Speed, Monopoly, but they haven't had the opportunity to play fun cooperative or social games. This project will provide them with a wide variety of games that will appeal to them on a social and cognitive level. In addition to these board games, I have plans on taking them to an Escape Room, play tag outside, and play Pickleball. While playing games can't solve their problems, I look forward to laughing and bonding with them as we make new memories and form connections that hopefully will combat some of the negativity that they experience outside of school.
