This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a high school, special ed class in an awesome 110-year-old high school that services those with low-income and Title I needs. Our class consists of students with a wide range of abilities from autism to speech language impairments and cognitive delays.

Every day is a wonderful new adventure when we enter our doors.

We have quite an assortment of interests and abilities and we like to see how many different ways we can incorporate them into our daily lives.

My Project

What better way to socialize with family, friends, and peers than by sitting in a group playing games? For many of my students, group activities are scary, anxiety-provoking, stress-inducing times that are often avoided at all costs.

Imagine having a role in the transformation from horrific to terrific for a teen with autism or other special needs?

My project is for card and board games which will be used in a variety of ways.

Initially, for those students who won't play because they don't know how and are hesitant to ask, by playing together, our classroom offers a safe, nurturing place for them to learn and gain confidence within the game.

Once they are satisfied they understand the main idea of the game and expected behaviors that go with it, typical peers are invited to join the group where the social skills blossom and the fun starts to really occur!
