My Project
For students, who may have challenges with attention, behavior, or motivation, the interactive and social nature of board games creates a sense of excitement around learning. When students are actively involved, they are more likely to retain information and feel invested in learning. Board games often require players to work together, take turns, and communicate with others, which fosters important social skills. Special education students can greatly benefit from this. The structured, low-pressure environment of a game provides a safe space for students to practice their social interactions, such as following rules, sharing, and resolving conflicts. Flexible seating arrangements, which allow students to choose where they work and how they interact with their surroundings, help create a more comfortable environment. Some students may benefit from sitting on a cushion, using or working in a quiet corner, depending on their sensory preferences or needs. This autonomy in their environment can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing them to focus better on learning. By providing flexible seating and opportunities for game-based learning, students are given more control over their learning process. Flexible seating encourages students to find the environment that works best for them, while board games provide opportunities for them to take responsibility for their actions, learn from mistakes, and become more independent learners. For students who struggle with emotional regulation, both board games and flexible seating can provide opportunities to practice self-control and emotional awareness. Board games naturally involve taking turns, handling wins/losses and managing frustration. Flexible seating allows students to choose settings that help them self-regulate. In special education classrooms, students often need explicit practice in both verbal and nonverbal communication. Board games can provide rich opportunities to develop this skill. Board games promote engagement, social skills, and cognitive development, while flexible seating helps create an individualized learning environment.
