My Students
Do you remember pretending to play some sort of character when you were a child? We made most of the props or costumes out of whatever we had to use. We used our imagination to help us envision or character. What would you do if you did not know anything about the character you wanted to create?
My students come from bilingual or non-English speaking homes.
Many of them have not been out of our small community. I have even had some get so excited to go to our free zoo that is just a few miles from us. Many of them do not know what a fireman, chef, or astronaut does. They do not have those experiences to allow them to pretend. Some of them do not have the language skills needed to interact with their peers in pretend play.
My Project
These dress up costumes will encourage my students to interact with each other more and give my ESL students the opportunity to improve their language skills. If they do not know about a particular character then they can learn about it as they transform into the character associated by the costume. They will use these during our developmental center time. This is a time when they are able to socially interact with their peers and develop their language skills at the same time.
These costumes are amazingly detailed.
They provide great visuals of what the characters could be and what they could do. Without your help the students would miss out on a wonderful opportunity to improve their language and social skills.
