My students need new playground materials such as scooters, bubbles and chalk, that will help them gain motor skills, and increase positive social interaction.
My students are in constant motion and they learn through play. Improving their coordination and ability to control their own movement increases their concentration and their self-esteem. When they learn to manipulate a scooter, blow bubbles, or use a paint brush, they feel successful.
My students are Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten children who are eager to learn.
They come to our school from various backgrounds and having attended different preschool programs. Some have never been to school. The playground is a place where all children can feel successful and practice both social and physical skills. All four of our kindergarten classes play together on the kindergarten playground and they enjoy two active play periods each day. We are a small school, located in a mountain community. Our program is well known and children come from different areas to attend our school.
My Project
Our Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten children will use these materials every day during outdoor time. They will also be able to use the materials during Physical Education time with our P.E. coach. Since we have almost 80 children on the playground together, it is necessary to provide a variety of activities to keep all of the children positively engaged. The children will be able to swivel back and forth on scooters on a "road" created with colorful cones. They will blow bubbles, exploring wind and air pressure. Our kindergarten children will practice eye-hand coordination using a numbered ring toss and a bouncing balls game. They will enjoy creating art at easels and draw with sidewalk chalk outdoors to music played on a cassette player. These materials will be a welcome addition to our stationary structure and sandbox.
Active Kindergarten children are happy children.
The children learn by playing, doing and relating to each other. They learn to share, to take turns, to try new things and to use their energy in a positive manner. Children also enjoy outdoor art activities and the outdoor easels provide a place to do that. The children can paint with adult supervision and as they create, they use language and practice communication skills. These materials will greatly enhance our playground.
