Children of today are fighting mass obesity rates. In order to help our children's health, we need to get them excited about exercise and nutrition! My students live in a high poverty area where school budgets have been cut drastically, which means that I have over-sized Physical Education classes.
My students are rambunctious preteens in an urban, poverty-stricken area of New York City.
They need physical activity not only for their overall health, but to alleviate their high energy levels. With the proper equipment, we can help motivate them to become lifelong learners of health and fitness.
My Project
Studies have shown that students that engage in recess activities are more productive during their afternoon classes. My students have created numerous games that they want to play during recess.
Students that create their own games build self confidence and positive self esteem.
Football, soccer, badminton are examples of recess equipment that our students want to use to increase their fitness levels. They like to pretend they are famous athletes.
My students could use that time to sit around and be lazy but instead they are requesting equipment to be active! My hope is that since they are creating their own games, they will use their free times to engage in rigorous fitness activity!
