Playful Assessments: Tools to Support Young Learners' Growth

My Project

As a school psychologist, I am deeply committed to supporting our students' emotional, social, and cognitive development. One of the most effective ways to assess and understand a child's needs is through play based assessment with a gentle, engaging approach that allows children to express themselves in ways that traditional testing cannot. However, to implement this approach effectively, I need specific tools that will help me observe, assess, and support their growth.

Children, especially those in early childhood, communicate best through play.

When they are engaged with toys, dolls, and creative materials, they show us their true emotions, struggles, and strengths. Play based assessments give me a window into their world helping me gather critical information about their language, problem-solving abilities, social interactions, and emotional regulation. But for these assessments to be truly effective, I need to have the right materials.

For many of our students, especially those with developmental delays, trauma histories, or behavioral challenges, traditional assessments can be intimidating or uninformative. Play based assessments, on the other hand, provide a safe and comfortable space for them to express themselves, revealing insights into their cognitive abilities, emotional states, and social relationships. The data gathered from these assessments will help inform both individualized support plans and school-wide strategies to improve student well-being.
