My Students
My students come from diverse backgrounds. I have a range of socio-economic levels and a wide range of social and academic needs in my classroom. Many of my students have traumatic backgrounds and hands-on play experiences help them connect with their peers and build communication and problem-solving skills. I have students from inpatient drug rehab programs, students experiencing homelessness, and students in more affluent homes. I want to provide them with learning materials that are hands-on, developmentally appropriate, and improve their learning.
The children in my classroom are a diverse group of caring, inquisitive learners who are extremely motivated by quality, hands-on learning.
They love to learn through new sensory experiences and these experiences will help them become healthy adults.
My Project
I am requesting playdough tools, playdough scissors, playdough math and shape activity mats, and diverse dolls to boost our learning in a hands-on way. As students use playdough to build shapes or create sets of objects, they are using a variety of senses to learn new math skills. Students will develop their fine motor skills by cutting, rolling, and shaping the dough with the scissors, rolling pins, and cutters. Additionally, my students will use the number and shape learning mats during math and learning centers to build number sense and geometric understanding. As play is one of the best ways for young children to learn, the diverse dolls will help build storytelling skills, cooperation, and oral language skills.
As our world speeds up, many students enter my classroom without having had rich cooperative play and sensory experiences.
As a result, I've incorporated more play-based activities into our day and have watched my students learn to share materials, communicate with each other, take control of their learning and build social-emotional awareness.
These materials will help me increase math and literacy skills while improving fine motor skills and build relationships between my diverse students. By sharing rich sensory and play materials, my students will learn to cooperate, collaborate, and develop the skills necessary to focus on learning.
