Play with Purpose: Helping Kids Heal Through Games

Help me give my students independent calming activities for self- regulating Mindful Mondays, social games that build confidence through teamwork and positive competition on Friendship Fridays, and SEL games that promote emotional regulation and healthy coping.

My Project

I teach courageous students in a special education classroom at a Title I school, where many come from low-income backgrounds and face significant social-emotional and behavioral challenges—including trauma, anxiety, emotional outbursts, trust issues, and difficulty forming friendships. Many struggle daily with self-regulation and overwhelming emotions, yet they arrive each morning with hope and a willingness to learn and grow.

This project will provide essential tools that help students regulate their emotions, build social skills, and strengthen resilience—key foundations for successful learning and personal growth.

Independent Mindful Monday activities will help students start the week calm, focused, and better able to self-regulate their emotions—setting a strong foundation for the week’s learning. SEL skill-building tools promote emotional regulation, healthy coping strategies, positive relationship skills, and resilience—crucial for navigating challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Friendship Friday games will foster communication, teamwork, and positive competition, helping students build social skills essential for collaboration and confidence.

These resources make a meaningful difference by increasing engagement, building trust and communication, and empowering students to take charge of their learning, social-emotional well-being, and behavioral regulation. My goal is to create a safe, nurturing, and healing classroom where every student feels seen, valued, and supported—so they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
