As with most kindergartners, my students are eager to play and learn. They are very curious about the world around them, and they are eager to use their natural creativity to make sense of that world. Although they are in a high-poverty school, they see the world through the same five-year-old eyes as anyone. They need supplies provided to them to make the most of their curiosity and eagerness to learn. I want them to go into the world with any advantage I can provide.
Right now we are working virtually, but hopefully, it will be safe again soon to be in the classroom.
My Project
As I returned to my classroom this year, my students and I had to make adjustments to how we interact. One concept that has taken a hit is learning how to compete in a game with other children. This is a life skill that some people take for granted, but has been taught less lately. Children are more likely to play games on the phone or on the computer. But the computer lets you know whose turn it is, and usually counts spaces for you, too.
I would like to send home games with students to practice these basic skills in a fun way.
By playing these games with their families, they not only practice reading directions, taking turns, and counting spaces; they also learn to be a good sport when they lose and to be a graceful winner. I cannot wait until the day the students can sit in a corner with their friends and practice with games again.
