My Students

The library is a great way for my students to experience many different adventures. They are able to use their imaginations to travel to far away places and meet many new and interesting characters. The students in this class come from a variety of backgrounds. The students enjoy listening to many different stories. They also enjoy hearing about the adventures of their favorite literary characters. The school is a large urban public school where most of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The Head Start program services students from low income families.

My Project

I believe that playtime in a Pre-school classroom is essential. I would like to add a dollhouse to my classroom to allow my students to discuss things, learn, and imagine together. Not only will the students be able to practice new vocabulary, but they will also learn valuable life skills. Plus it’s a place to help kids work through life’s issues in a safe place.

Doll house play encourages imagination and creativity, vocabulary development, life skills, fine motor skills, problem solving, classification skills, and organizational skills.

Play is the foundation for all learning for young children, therefore, I want to give my students the opportunity to practice and develop many valuable skills through the use of play. Play is how children begin to understand and process their world. Children's play unlocks their creativity and imagination, and develops reading, thinking, and problem solving skills as well as further develops motor skills. It provides the base foundation for learning.

When playing with other children or adults, vocabulary and language skills are fostered. My students will learn to use language to communicate meaning as well as picking up new words and hearing the grammatical structure of the English language.

Playing with a dollhouse or dolls will allow my students to reenact what happens in their everyday lives, using the words and phrases they hear. By providing opportunities for open ended play, my students will automatically get their creative juices flowing, and the possibilities are endless.
