This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My awesome grade 2-3 students are fun, energetic and also autistic. My students are also curious explorers who love to create, build and play. As a teacher of this wonderfully unique population of learners I understand that play is an important element of learning. Through games my kids learn the skills of turn taking, social language, self regulation and rules of play. I want them to learn that play can be fun without video games and devices too!

I work in a low income area and my students are often kept in the house on screens playing video games as the streets are not very safe where they live.

Unfortunately opportunities to gather outside in the community for social play can be limited for some. Many only see peers their age at school. I'd like to make their time together an opportunity for fun as well as learning. Recreation-Leisure skills are a taught and assessed part of our curriculum so in our class PLAY equals LEARNING!

My goals in requesting these materials are to provide interesting, accessible and fun materials that will motivate my students to interactively play with each other in a socially appropriate manner. It includes the following materials and objectives:

The Engineering a Coaster Activity not only fosters play but also supports STEM learning and fine motor skills.

Board games will help them play cooperatively and learn to take turn and be good sports if they don't always win. (much needed!)

Materials such as Paint, Theraputty and Play Doh support sensory regulation, fine motor development and a calm body for learning.

The Vinyl Whiteboard.Dots are to identify areas for learning and play centers.
