My students need math manipulatives and math resource books such as Learning Resources Folding Geometric Shapes, Extending Children's Mathematics: Fractions & Decimals: Innovations In Cognitively Guided Instruction and Learning Advantage 8837 Pattern Block Activity Cards.
Math time is the best time! My students love to learn math and they are understanding concepts more deeply each day! Math is hard but it is fun!
Our school is a family.
Everybody knows everyone else and all the teachers help and support all the students that attend our school not just the ones in their own classrooms. We have families that help prep materials, work in the gardens, and volunteer in the classroom. Our school is unlike any other in our large district. We are a hidden gem and everyone that walks through our gates, students, teachers, staff, and families walks through them happily.
My Project
My students will use the manipulatives I have ordered to better understand capacity, geometry, and fractions. They will have the ability to have hands on experiences with what we just have pictures in a textbook of. They will be able to see how pints and gallons are related by having containers to manipulate. They will create whole shapes with fractional pieces, and build 3-dimensional shapes with the folding geometric shapes I am asking for. I am also requesting pattern block activity cards so my students can work with various shapes. The foam fraction circles will allow my students to play with fractions and create equivalent ones with their hands. I will have some new teacher resource books such as a math games workshop text and a book on building mental math computational skills. I want to help my students understand mathematical concepts and not just processes and algorithms.
Donations will help my students play with math.
They will be able to discover conversions of fractions and capacity using the gallon set and foam fraction circles. They will build 3-dimensional shapes to see how many faces, edges, and vertices they have using the folding geometric shapes. They will have a teacher that can better teach mathematical concepts with the professional development books. They will be able to transfer their knowledge to word problems and other real world math tasks.
