My Students
We are a Title 1 school located in rural N.C. We are basically a community school and perform as much as possible for functions on and off-campus. Many of these kids are involved in sports, band, and chorus all at the same time!! So much is required, yet they always find a way to give their all. As with all schools, we have our problems. The difference is, we have a great parent support group which enables us to rely on their intervention as needed...
Sixty percent of our band students are on instruments that are purchased online from lesser-known companies with limited ...The quality of the items is very poor.
On a daily basis, I am attempting to do repairs, which takes up a huge amount of instructional time but are needed in order to have workable instruments for the band...The parents always try to help at home...The repairs I've seen will blow your mind...lol... From fish hooks to duct tape and every glue imaginable, they always intervene but at the end, I always have to do repairs!! Its all about keeping the kids involved!!
My Project
We are in a very rural area. The majority of my kids are on instruments that are affordable and purchased from vendors outside the country. The items are not from known dealers; therefore, requesting repairs are not an option.
On a daily basis, I have to repair instruments, during class, or send them off if they can afford it, to a dealer that will take a chance on repairing the items!!
Most of the time, they don't want to touch them due to the fragile material the instruments are made of...Which leaves me to do all the repairs...In my attempt to do so, I am having to basically, "McGyver" the tools to make the adjustments...I've personally brought some tools for home but they are not what I need to successfully complete the task...
The repair kit, simple tools, and pads will allow me the opportunity to better service my kids. Do know my kids will be forever grateful for any assistance...Thank you
