My Students
I teach kindergarten at a large urban elementary school in the northwest side of Chicago. The neighborhood my school serves is a diverse immigrant community. My class is multilingual. Seventy-five percent of my students are English language learners. That group of students represents ten world languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Romanian, and Korean.
My students bring a myriad of diverse languages and experiences to the classroom.
But we all work together to accomplish common goals. In this grade, children are tasked with understanding basic math, reading and writing skills while developing their social and emotional selves. The best way to keep kindergarteners engaged is by giving them opportunities to experience a variety of activities that promote creativity and exploration.
My Project
I am asking for playtime materials that children will love. My students need a classroom kitchen, pretend housekeeping materials, and paintbrushes to imagine, create and explore.
This project will change my students' lives for the better because it will give them the opportunity to work with materials that promote social development, creative development, cognitive development and language development.
For children, play is the universal language. Through play, children learn problem solving and communication skills as they interact collaboratively with each other. This is a crucial part of a child's development, particularly for students who are learning English as a second language.
For this reason, I am asking for play materials that students can use together during our scheduled playtime. During this time, students are given the opportunity to pick a play center of their choice, without interference from adults. By playing and exploring in their own ways, children develop creativity and independence.
My students will be so excited to come to school each day knowing they have the chance to do what they do best: play, learn and explore!
