My students need Play-Doh Drill and Fill to engage them in good oral hygiene. They need Play-Doh shapes and Play-Doh Plus for a hands-on approach to learning about math.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."- Benjamin Franklin. Imagine SQUISHING, squeezing, ROLLING, and kneading! The Play-Doh possibilities are endless while learning in science, social studies, math, health, and language arts.
I have 24 AMAZING first graders who I try to provide an oasis and safe haven amidst one of the highest crime ridden neighborhoods in the heart of South Los Angeles.
Our school is only 3 miles away from where the 1991 Los Angeles Riots reached its worst apex. My students are challenged with economic hardships and poor family structures, yet it does not deter their hopes and dreams for a brighter future. They attend school everyday with an unwavering curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. My students are like little sponges. They absorb all the academic information that is provided to them and are eager to know more. They enjoy hands on experiences, but many times I am not able to provide them because the tools that I have don't lend themselves to a greater learning encounter.
My Project
Who DOESN'T like playing with Play-Doh!!! My students would think I went bonkers having them interact with Play-Doh as we "learned" about shapes, health, or used higher order thinking skills, such as analyzing characters by creating a 3D figure with Play-Doh, and retelling stories in collaborative groups. These high anxiety assignments would immediately be reduced to anxiety free assignments with the help from using Play-Doh. From previous experiences, watching other students use Play-Doh, I have observed the calming effects it promotes. Play-Doh could be used while counseling students. Play-Doh would engage my students by not only learning such vocabulary as rolling, squishing, and squeezing, but it would give them a hands-on, engaging approach strengthening their fine motor skills. My students would be enthralled using Play-Doh to etch out spelling words or math facts. They could also use the cookie cutter templates along with their favorite colored Play-Doh to practice sight words.
Play-Doh is a wonderful resource used to magnify and build on my students' imagination and creativity!
This would be another outlet for learning especially when I'm trying to meet the needs of all my students. Please help me make learning about health, science, math, language arts entertaining, exciting, and engaging in a relaxed environment. Thank you!!
