This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I get to teach history to energetic, creative, and fun-going middle schoolers from South Los Angeles. Though they are in special education classes with large learning gaps, each of them brings their unique talents, personalities, and world views that I use to help make the study of History real and relevant to them.
My Project
Reading is hard for many kids. Many of my students have struggled all through elementary school to read basic words like "over" or "have." They have a natural tendency to hate reading. Even worse, to answer questions based on the reading. But add some fun elements like play-doh and you have opened the door to a possibility of making reading and reading comprehension fun.
Using play-doh allows all my students to express their reading comprehension in a creative, thought-provoking way no matter their writing abilities or lack thereof.
With the play-doh, they are being asked to create a symbol or representation of the reading. This activity challenges my students with higher reading abilities because they've never really been asked to do this before, taking them out of their comfort zone. And it gives my students with lower or no writing abilities a chance to shine just as brightly as their peers, in fact, some of these same students often have a high level of artistic ability. Please consider helping me bring this project to life.
