My Students
My first grade classroom is filled with the college graduates of 2030. We embrace grit, integrity, curiosity, and zest. We work hard so that we can graduate high school, enroll in competitive colleges and universities, graduate college, and positively impact change in our community, Detroit.
My classroom is currently home to 27 tenacious first graders.
They call Detroit home and many of them have seen little outside of their own neighborhoods. Around 86 percent qualify for free and reduced price lunch and 100 percent are black. Only 15 percent of my class came in on grade level in reading, and 19 percent in math. My school, a college preparatory school, is working diligently to provide its scholars with the quality education they deserve, one that will prepare them for college. All of my scholars are eager to tackle the rigors of first grade and they crave to know more about the world around them. Their parents are some of the hardest workers I know. Many work two jobs and/or the night shift and are still able to find time to volunteer in the classroom. We are a community dedicated to learning.
My Project
The Play-Doh Creation Corner will create a space for my scholars to explore and investigate creativity and critical thinking through construction and collaboration. Through self-guided exploration, these materials will support the development of my scholars, and will create joy for problem solving in the classroom. While using these materials before and after school, and during recess, my scholars will develop their social skills as they practice sharing, taking turns, and working together. In science, they will develop their critical thinking skills as they discover how to construct the tallest tower in the class, how to create an effective water dam using kinesthetic sand, and how represent the world through Play-Doh models. These materials will foster creativity by providing my scholars with different mediums to communicate and express themselves.
By supporting this project you will not only be providing my scholars with the tools to experience hands-on learning, but the opportunity to strengthen their investment, joy, and curiosity for learning.
These materials serve as the starting point for critical thinking and creativity in my classroom, and will assist in developing my scholars to be future problem solvers in their own community, Detroit.
