My students need Play-Dough to provide them with opportunities to be creative and develop a love of art.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Kindergarten teacher and I can teach any subject using the arts. I have a wonderful class of 25 eager and active children who are coming to school, some for the first time, many of whom do not yet speak English, and are eager to learn and explore.
How to engage English Language Learners?
This year I will be teaching a kindergarten class of English Language Learners. Our school is a Title 1 school and a large percentage of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.
Supplies are difficult to obtain in this current economy. My parents are not in a position to supply even of the most basic materials much less art materials like Play-Doh.
I want my students to use Play-Doh because I believe that it will be
easier for them when they can connect to the arts and express themselves through using Play-Doh as a vehicle.
I am requesting Play-Doh modeling clay and Play-Doh tools.
My Project
My students will use the Play-Doh clay and tools to explore Play-Doh's many uses. They will use it to make letters in the alphabet, first their names and then other words. I will put various items in the center such as a book, or pencil and have them make the letters for those objects. I will encourage my children to use language as they are working together. In a small group children find it more comfortable to speak a new language. Play-Doh will provide the vehicle to make this experience happen.
Play-Doh will provide an opportunity for my students to use art materials to explore and express themselves and develop language in a way that no worksheet can do.
Worksheets are static and dry. Play-Doh gives students to use many of their senses-tactile, visual, olfactory as while they are working together in groups, they will be talking about what they are creating and increase their use of English.
