I teach music at an intermediate school to grades third through fifth with approximately 850 students.

About 34% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. In addition to teaching general music, I also have a choir made up of 5th grade students that meet before school, and an after school instrument club that uses barred instruments such as xylophones, and other percussion instruments. My students are bright, eager and enthusiastic learners. They are especially excited to play instruments. I currently have a very small amount of instruments in my classroom, with class sizes ranging from 25 to 34 students. The limited number of instruments I have do not provide all students an opportunity to play and have a sense of community. Providing students with these instruments would help complete our ensembles and increase their opportunities for creativity in their music making. I would utilize these instruments in my daily music classes, as well as extra-curricular groups.

My Project

I am requesting 2 new glockenspiels for my music classroom. My class sizes range from 25-34 students. Students are eager to play the barred instruments, but because I only have 8 we have to rotate through for all of them to play. This typically ends up taking the entire 45 minute class period, which is not ideal.

I plan to slowly add to the instruments over time and adding just 2 new glockenspiels will help tremendously.

It will allow us time to not only play instruments, but to move on to creating dance, movement and other activities to accompany our instrument playing.
