My Project

Play is a fundamental vehicle for building communication and compassion skills in children, offering a natural and enjoyable context for interaction and expression. Through various forms of play children engage in verbal exchanges, nonverbal communication, and social interactions with peers and adults enacting real life situations (e.g., being ill, needing help, working a helping profession, etc.) leading to compassion building. In these playful interactions, children learn to convey their thoughts, ideas, and feelings learning how to collaborate with peers and empathize with others. Students then take these learned skills with them to support community members in need of assistance (e.g., helping their elders, tending to injured peers, being a friend to classmates, etc.).

Play provides opportunities for children to develop empathy and perspective-taking skills.

As children engage in pretend play scenarios, they take on various roles and perspectives, allowing them to practice seeing the world from different viewpoints and understanding the feelings and intentions of others. Play food in speech therapy can also teach students to work toward alleviating suffering in others by promoting nurturing behaviors and caring interactions. When children engage in pretend play with food, they often simulate scenarios of feeding and caring for others, such as serving food to a sick doll or preparing a meal for a friend. These activities naturally encourage nurturing behaviors and help children. This compassion and emotional intelligence in children can be measured through observations of social interactions between peers, checklists for desired compassion building behaviors, and student input.
