My Students
My students come to music class ready to learn, move, sing, play, and have fun. I love their enthusiasm and their willingness to try new things. I am also amazed at the growth I see in them, as they learn multiple songs, dances, rhythm patterns, and instrument skills.
I love it when they say that a song I've taught them has gotten stuck in their heads.
That tells me I've done my job!
I'm a full-time music specialist, teaching 45 classes from Kindergarten through 6th grade, at two elementary schools. My goal is to tailor my lessons to the capabilities of each age group, challenging them with new information each time, as well as with opportunities to apply their knowledge. I start with the voice, then move on to rhythm instruments, and in 4th grade, the recorder.
My Project
We sing a lot of great songs in music class, which is terrific fun. Some of the songs have games that go with them. But variety is the spice of life, right?
Sometimes a great song needs just a little kick to boost it up to AWESOME--like a simple xylophone accompaniment or some maracas to shake.
The xylophone is relatively easy to play since the wooden bars are labeled with the note names. Students can be successful in playing it even before they learn to read notation. Students can use maracas to play rhythms from simple to complex, using a pattern we've already learned, or by making one up themselves. These instruments encourage participation by all students, even those who don't necessarily like to sing. And everyone can have a chance to play one or the other in a single class period.
