My Students
I teach art in a low income school for at-risk students. We have limited funds for supplies and the many of the students' behavior has changed for the better just to stay in the art class. I teach more than art in my classroom, we all learn about life and how to deal with obstacles and tasks of life.
I take my students from the small town in NC to the rest of the world.
My mode of transportation is the work of art we explore. As they consider artworks in historical perspective, students begin to gain a clearer understanding of what they themselves value. Many of the students in this area are very focused on outward appearances. Materialism is prevalent in this demographic and middle grades. Many of the students do not understand the processes involved in creating or destroying a product. This unit on recycling encourages creativity and uses higher level thinking skills to identify problems, explore original solutions, and complete the problem solving process with regard to the environment. This unit is a lesson that the students will take with them throughout life.
My Project
Over a series of weeks the classes will engage in conversations of consumerism. The lesson will implement many processes on manufacturing paper products, using recycled paper, blender, and paper making kit to remake paper. We will also discuss advertisement, cost to produce new vs. recycled, and decomposition of the materials. The classes will then recycle their own materials from discarded materials and realize how easy it is to recycle and turn something old into new. These projects take used paper and found objects and turn them into reusable and able to be planted (embed seeds in the paper) works of art. The lesson will take used or damaged paper products and objects found in nature and turn them into new usable sheets of paper. Each sheet of paper will have an element focusing on a different aspects of recycling.
This project will take the students knowledge of recycling and turn it into a hands on learning experience that will effect them for the rest of their lives.
It will turn the understanding of recycling and embed a fundamental knowledge of why it is necessary to recycle. Students will become aware of how many products are made and destroyed. They will get a better understanding of why recycling is import and should be a part of our daily lives.
