Plants and Insects

My students need materials to see the life cycle of different types of insects as part of the life science curriculum.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. K.'s classroom raised $243

My Students

Living in the inner city my students rarely see animal life cycles taking place. The more things we can show the students the better they will appreciate living things. Students are required to learn the two different lifecycles of insects. The butterfly lifecycle illustrates complete metamorphosis of insects. Students will not only study the lifecycle of insects but the plants they feed on. They will grow plants needed to feed the butterfly larvae. Students will take samples from the plants to stain and study under the microscope.

The students I teach live in the inner city.

Majority of them rarely spend time looking and observing nature in the field. Since it's very costly to bring students into the field I believe it’s very important to bring the field into the classroom. This gives the students a chance to see living things up close and study them.

My Project

Hand-on activities are the most important part of science. This project will not only provide the students a chance at a hands-on experiment it will also require them to grow food for the butterflies larvae. The students will have to provide the proper nutrients for each stage of the butterfly lifecycle. Students will also have to grow the plants that the larva feeds on.

Having students learn the lifecycles of plants and animals is a very important concept in science.

It is also important for students to understand how human impact on nature can disrupt the living cycles of living things. In this project, many important science concepts will be covered. The most important part being getting the students excited about science.
