My Students

I am a seventh grade English teacher in a high-needs school on the Southwest side of Chicago. My school contains classroom libraries rather than a general school library, so it is up to my students to keep the classroom library alive and engaging.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to teach students from great novels when there are not enough books to go around.

Have you ever read that book that you couldn't, or didn't, want to put down? Many of my students experience this lack often due to an inadequate number of books for them to take home. The availability of classroom sets of books is very scarce in my school, and I must keep these sets in my classroom so remaining classes have access to them as well.

My Project

As a product of the 3rd largest school district in the nation, and a member of the diverse community in which my school is located, I have observed the challenges my students face in and out of school. Because this society has become so diverse, teaching tolerance of other cultures is deeply embedded in my instructional lesson plans. In doing this, my hope is that my students gain a deeper appreciation of other cultures, and see past appearances and disabilities to form friendships and be able to interact in this society in positive ways. I am asking for these books because my students need multiple opportunities and resources to ensure that this is successful. Acquiring a classroom set of "Seedfolks" books will allow my students to interact often with their peers and learn from one another in a safe and nurturing environment.

Because it is important to connect students' learning to real life situations, I believe this novel would provoke active discussions that will stimulate students to think and make wise choices about friendships, decrease instances of peer pressure violence, and develop tolerance for others.

By providing as many resources as possible, I feel this will empower my students to take responsibility for their behavior and seek alternate ways to create healthy and safe friendships.
