My students need writing tools, craft supplies, and plant materials to study plants and to design models that mimic pollination and seed dispersal critical to survival.
Think about science class when you were in school. You might remember reading textbooks, writing out definitions, and taking chapter tests. Today's science class is a far-cry from science classes of the past. My students are directly involved in developing experiments and analyzing the results.
As we move into teaching with the guidance of the Next Generation Science Standards, my seven and eight year old students are responsible for collaboratively planning and conducting investigations and developing simple models while they apply science and engineering practices.
In our interdependence of living things unit, my students will plan and conduct experiments to learn plants depend on light and water to survive. They will also be immersed in the world of pollination and seed dispersal and the dependence plants have on animals for these processes. They will end their study with the charge of developing a new plant and a pollination or seed dispersal method for this plant. These will be amazing experiences for my students!
My Project
This project requests a variety of materials that will be brought together to fully develop the concepts of the interdependence of living things. I am requesting potting soil, cups, seeds, live plants, and books to support my students learning about plant parts and to give them the experience of caring for and growing plants of their own. The various craft supplies including yarn, feathers, foam, pom pons, wax works, wooden spools and beads, chenille stems and styrofoam balls will be utilized in creating models of seeds for the plants developed by each student or group of students. Finally, the remaining materials of scissors, sharpies, post-it notes, pens, colored paper, and poster board will be utilized in the planning, sketching, creating, and presenting phases of the project. We will be incorporating art, writing, reading, speaking, and listening standards into this highly engaging unit.
Moving to the Next Generation Science Standards and working from the beginning of a child's school career to prepare him or her for college and career will have a wonderful impact on our children's futures.
Asking students to design, implement, report, and analyze from a young age will help each child see how school prepared him or her for life. Your donations to this project will allow students to be innovative and creative while learning about the interdependence of living things.
