My Students

"In a multicultural, diverse society there are countless ways in which people negotiate the everyday lived experience and reality of diversity." - Randa Abdel Fattah

My students come from rural households where 49% of those households are in poverty, yet our students practice community daily despite the statistics.

My students learn in a socioeconomically diverse schoolhouse where some have access to resources and some don't. Some students are extremely supported and other arrive at school to embrace an image of community absent in their own homes.

My students face challenges unique to their family and unique to adolescents growing up in an increasingly digital age, but they also bring to the table a sense of resilience that amazes me. Their ability to be flexible, caring, and creative trumps the common belief about teens. Egocentrism is present but, more often than not, these students have been taught to care.

My goal as a first-year teacher is simple; I desire to improve the student's ability to articulate their cultural context. I believe they can read and write themselves to their goals, being proud of where they come from and focused on where they're headed.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of books and a class Kindle reader. I want to engage my students with culturally relevant material while changing what they are reading on, in hopes of prompting more engagement with literature.

My students will not only engage the text, but we will create a class project that positively impacts the environment, helping the students to move past word to action.

(Our hope is to plant a tree!)

The book "Seedfolks" will encourage us to engage cultures critically as a method of communal development. More importantly, we will begin to explore how one small action can make a difference in this world we share. This text will begin shaping our participation in our community.
