This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My middle schoolers are completely intrigued with propagation and the idea of growing something from a seed or stem!

In sixth grade we recently spent a week learning at the San Diego Natural History Museum, where my students researched the effects of climate change and global warming.

They were stunned to hear what the long term outcomes were for the environment. However, once they realized that planting more trees would help balance the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in their community, they have been adamant about doing so.

My students have been eagerly observing the growth rate of an avocado pit that we propagated along with several bundles of lettuce and onions that have regrowth. Through discussion and documentation, the students are learning how to reuse otherwise discarded food and how to feed themselves in a sustainable way. Please help me give my students live plants, potting soil and planters.

We have also included more indoor plants to our classroom for the benefits they promote- which my students researched online. They really enjoy taking ownership of all the plants and watering them, pruning them and even talking to them!

Being that my students live in the inner city where fresh produce is difficult to obtain, the materials I've requested in this project will absolutely give them the upper hand in eating a healthy and balanced diet. The funding of this project will also allow for a hands-on learning experience correlated to what they learned at the museum and will encourage them to begin gardening at home.

Once their seedlings take root and their plants are healthy enough, the children will be so excited to take them home and share their knowledge . Additionally, the vases I requested will look beautiful presenting the home grown flowers they will care for!
