This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Although I have a hydroponic tower garden in my classroom, this is the first time we even had an outside garden and garden club on our campus!

I was approached by several students who showed an interest in starting a school garden and garden club to help beautify our school and to learn how to grow fruits like strawberries and seasonal vegetables.

We started our after school club this September with just 8 students and continue to invite more to join us. Students who attend club after school enjoy hands on learning. Our club is student led and for enrichment, however we always start out with a short lesson the supports the hands on activity that follows. So far the students have been busy learning about seeds and the life cycle of plants. The students and I are also in the process of putting together modular raised beds for our outside plot however we are in need of some important supplies to start seedlings using our indoor hydroponic system. Since we are starting from scratch our Garden Club is in need of basic start up gardening supplies such as seeds, vermiculite, and nutrients to start seeds on our classroom hydroponic system so we can transplant them outside when the plot is ready.
