My Students
My students come to school with little prior knowledge but with an eagerness to learn. Books to read and having books read to you are not a luxury my students have at home. Having manipulatives that encourage growing and learning is essential for these wonderful children.
My students come from homes where snuggling up with an elder is not always possible.
I teach school where 79% or more of the students have free/reduced lunches. Parents are struggling to give their children the basics. Having transportation to and from a library is not a reality. My students need to foster a love for reading. This will occur when the students are able to surround themselves with all kinds of books and manipulatives that encourage reading!
My Project
The big book shelf will allow the students to see the wide variety of big books and entice the students to look and read. The puppets and felt boards will encourage the students to write their own stories and share with their peers. To truly advance their reading skills and comprehension, they need to be able to re-read these wonderful stories independently again and again. It is remarkable how quickly children of such a young age can memorize stories. I find that after being read the same story five times, children can read the story independently with incredible levels of detail and accuracy. Having the opportunity to read familiar stories independently allows students to become more comfortable and confident with reading. Having the text in front of them will help them develop their understanding of print concepts and allow them to frequently recognize sight words.
You will make it possible for my students to grow as readers.
They will be able to find the big books that they enjoy reading, and begin practicing reading on their own. They will learn to write their own stories and feel confidence as their skills grow. They will be exposed to important children's literature in a format they can access. My students are already excited to read, and now they will have this opportunity.
