Plant Presses for Botanical Fun

My students need plant presses and herbarium paper.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Stergio's classroom raised $1,465

My Students

Many of our students live in apartments in this large city. Most have not had the opportunity to grow their own plants or even appreciate that there are many beautiful plants and flowers growing right here in the city. I hope to allow students to appreciate that we do have these benefits here.

The Living Environment curriculum does not have much plant biology in it anymore.

We touch upon it in Ecology and Cells, but nothing to deep and rich. I envision starting a Botany club at my school that will utilize the requested plant presses to enrich the education of students who are interested in plants. During the fall and spring at our school, we can collect plants that are in flower in the neighborhood. I'd like to help our students to appreciate these plant species and start a herbarium at our school. There are other common "weed" plants that are edible and serve medicinal purposes. I also hope to show the artistic side of plants. Pressing plants is an art as well. When collecting the plants they are placed into the press where they are squeezed for about a week until they are dry. Then they are mounted on herbarium paper and presented and labeled.

My Project

When collecting the plants in the neighborhood, they are placed into the press where they are squeezed for about a week until the plant specimen is dry. Then they are then taken out of the press and mounted onto herbarium paper using glue. After mounting on herbarium paper, a beautiful "portrait" of the plant is made and presented and labeled. These can be kept on file or framed and put around the school. Since they are labeled with what they are and where and when they were collected, it can be a learning experience for all those who see them.

This project can make a big difference.

We can make a catalog of plants in our neighborhood, plus there is an art form that is attached to pressed plants on herbarium paper. Students can take both a botanical and artistic point of view when collecting and preparing the specimens. Others can view them in the hallways and gain knowledge of the common plants that are found in their neighborhoods.
