My Students
"Good morning Mrs. Bailey."
Those words, a firm handshake and eye contact are how we begin each day! Developing even these basic social skills is important work in our classroom. We integrate community, respect, and kindness with our math, language arts and science every day, and it works!
I am a graduate of UCSC and earned my teaching credential from CCNY.
After completing my credential program, I moved back to California with my husband and children. Since then, I have had the incredible good fortune to become a teacher in my hometown. I have spent the last 5 years teaching at the highest poverty school (90% ELL) in our county, and it is a job that I love! I truly appreciate that the students in our school really need teachers who are there to not only teach them, but to model being a community member as well.
Within my district, I sit on many committees (ELA, Science, K12 Curriculum, and GATE). I find that by extending my professional purview beyond my classroom, I have learned so much more about the craft of teaching. This year, I am also our school's designee principal, which has been a very rewarding experience. I am grateful to be able to work with administrators who are interested in helping teachers grow professionally. I am privileged to be able to give back!
My Project
I am requesting help in financing a summer course for planning my curricula for the 2015/16 school year. It is a course being offered through Dominican University by one of our area's most respected teacher mentors. I believe that immersing myself in this course work would allow me to tackle a big challenge facing all educators right now. This challenge is how to find the time to meaningfully plan instruction aligned to the Common Core and NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards).
Currently, my district has opted to not purchase curriculum and is looking to teachers to develop and plan. This is a massive undertaking if it is to be done purposefully.
I believe that by taking this course I will have a unique opportunity to design units and projects that will truly engage and serve to move my students forward. Students need lessons to be intentional, as well as differentiated, which is a vast endeavor. I would relish the chance to do this hard work given the opportunity.
Starting next year off with a solid plan would be such an accomplishment!
Things in education are so up in the air right now with the changing of the standards that it has become a challenge to create meaningful lessons. Yet, that is precisely what students need most! If I could purposefully design units and lesson aligned to our new standards and be ready to teach, my students would gain traction in their learning in a much more authentic and quick manner. They deserve planning!
