My students are the best in the state! They are eager to learn and enjoy being challenged. My goal for my students is to have them feel as comfortable accessing the curriculum as their non-special education peers. My biggest challenge with obtaining this goal is not having enough materials to do this.
All of my students are curious.
All of my students want to learn. All of my students want to make their family and teachers proud. All of my students want to do well in school. All of my students have big dreams for when they grow up.
All of my students are also on IEPs (Individualized Education Plans). They need support finding ways to access the curriculum and make sense of what they are learning. They are just as capable as their peers and are just as smart so they do the same work as their peers, they just need additional support to be successful with the work.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, live in low income housing, experience violence in their neighborhoods, and often overcome obstacles just getting to school.
My Project
These place value coins will be an amazing addition to our resources here at school. We began a new curriculum this year and have not been given ANY materials to carry out this curriculum. The first unit was all about place value and after our first assessment, we realized that our students are not mastering what place value is, grasping the size of numbers to compare them, and imagining numbers relative to each other. As a result, we need more visuals to deepen their understanding.
With the use of these materials, students will be able to build their conceptual understanding of numbers by actually building numbers.
Donations to this project will greatly improve my classroom and my students will benefit by better understanding place value.
By building this foundational understanding, my students will be able to later attack more challenging math concepts and skills.
My students deserve the same education that their non-urban peers are receiving and these materials will be one piece of that. By having access to these materials, students will develop a stronger conceptual understanding of numbers.
