There are certain skills that are the building blocks for complex mathematical processes. Place value covers the basic understanding for how numbers are built and how you determine their value. Without a strong foundation in place value, students struggle with ALL mathematical concepts.
I teach at a Title I school in Central Florida where the majority of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
We have a wonderful community of teachers and learners at our school, but like any other Title I school, funds are limited. I teach a diverse group of second grade students who are thoughtful mathematicians and love to learn through play. I have students that need activities that will enrich their thinking, and others who need activities that will help them build a stronger foundation. The materials in this project will help meet the needs of all of my students.
My Project
The materials in this project will populate a "Place Value Center". Students will be able to strengthen their place value skills through play. These activities combine fun activities with critical thinking and hands on experiences. As place value is a foundational skill that is critical to all second grade math, these materials will be used throughout the entire school year. The variety of activities will provide them with hands on exposure to the content in many different formats, helping to maximize their ability to make connections to their prior knowledge.
2014 math skills for second graders are more demanding than ever before.
By the end of the year students are telling time, working with fractions, completing multi-step word problems, and completing two and three digit subtraction utilizing regrouping and borrowing. If students do not have a strong foundation in place value, they will struggle with every single one of these skills. Your donation will help make essential learning FUN!
