My Students
I teach a K-2 bilingual class in an urban school with 85% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are brand new to the United States. My students enter my classroom with little or no English. Many of them have never had a school experience in their native country. It is my job to prepare them for the regular education classroom.
My students are currently from 4 different countries, speaking 3 different languages.
My students are all eager and excited to learn.
My Project
My students depend upon hands-on materials for learning math concepts. We have an old wooden base ten blocks set that is missing pieces and difficult to clean. These base ten blocks are the most-used math manipulative in my classroom. I would like to replace this set with a class set of brand new base ten blocks that are plastic and will be easily cleaned.
These base ten blocks really cement the concept of place value and number sense , by providing the students with a tangible object to manipulate.
We also use these blocks when learning addition and subtraction. In addition to the base ten blocks, a new class set of place value mats will be valuable. Two teacher tools will also assist in student learning of place value: a place value flip chart and a magnetic set of base ten blocks.
