Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been given the opportunity to teach the best group of little people imaginable. They are kind, generous, and appreciate the small things in life. They arrive each day with a smile, ready to show the world the greatness inside of them.

These little people are absolutely amazing.

They face many challenges and hardships that would defeat any average person. One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch, English is a second language for the majority of my class, and many are facing extraordinary challenges at home. Some even experience periods of homelessness. My students are not average, however. They are extraordinary!

Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school ready and excited to learn! They come with open minds and open hearts and are the most remarkable and kindhearted people I have had the pleasure to know. This is shown day after day, as they request extra time to work in place of recess, show excitement over STEM and other hands-on activities, persevere to complete accurate work no matter how long it takes, and extend a helping hand to classmates when they need it.

Reading is critical...the more of it that students do, the better readers they become. It is crucial that all students are given a wide selection of high interest books for independent reading. These books should appeal to all students and range in level.

This year, my kids love all things humorous. After observing their go-to books in the library, I am noticing that Dav Pilkey books are in high demand! Unfortunately, my personal collection is limited and there aren't enough Dav Pilkey books for every student interested to check out in our media center. Instead of students waiting, I want to provide them with these options in our classroom library.

These books will foster an excitement for reading and make our SSR (silent sustained reading) time exciting and engaging.
