My students need 10 pigs to dissect. I am a first year teacher and have just been switched to a freshman living environment class whom show great improvement when using hands on materials.
Everyone should have a chance to dissect pigs. Many inner city students leave their high school only seeing the "cool" stuff on TV. I want to bring it to them. I teach in a high-need community in which my kids continually are given paper labs for their living environment freshman science class. I want to inspire a passion for science during their first year of high school by doing such things as pig dissections, instead of allowing kids to go through high school thinking science isn't fun.
I was just switched into this living environment course mid-semester and the students asked "Miss, are we going to do anything fun?" Since I dissected pigs in high school I told them that we would probably dissect pigs. The reaction was amazing from "ewww" to "wow" to "no way" but nevertheless it caught their attention. Unfortunately, my school doesn't have the supplies needed for this lab. That is why I was hoping someone could help supply pigs for the students to dissect.
I just need 10 pigs so that I can give one pig to every 4-5 students. It will help my students with the anatomy of animals. Worksheets and a presentation will accompany the dissecting of the pig. It will benefit my students since they will be excited about learning, they will have an awesome hands on experience, and they will be able to teach back the class everything they learned in a presentation.
This is extremely important to my students because it is an opportunity of a life time. I still remember when I was able to dissect pigs in high school and I want them to be able to remember the same experience. Some of my kids won't ever make it to college so I want them to see how cool science can be and maybe that will inspire them to keep studying the subject.
