My students need adaptive materials such as visual readers, and videos in order to piece together their place in the community, school, and within themselves.
"Discouraging an enthusiasm can be just another way of dismantling a strategy that helps a child with autism feel better regulated-or worse, removing a source of interest and joy. A more helpful approach is to: use the enthusiasm as a way to expand the child's outlook and improve the child's life."
Our classroom is comprised of 6 teenagers with moderate to severe disabilities.
Every student in our class has been diagnosed with autism, due to this our students struggle with making connections between academics, daily living skills, social skills, and themselves. My student's communication skills range from completely non-verbal, to limited verbal abilities. Even with their difficulty with expressing themselves, these teens have shown myself, and their parents the desire they have to become independent adults.
Our school is a specialized public school in Staten Island, New York dedicated exclusively to teaching special needs children. The materials requested will not only benefit my current class, but any group of students I may have the privilege of teaching in the future.
My Project
The materials I've requested, such as Explore Personal Care, Look 'n Cook Microwave Cookbook, Living on Your Own, and Explore Your Community will provide my learners with visuals, readers, and the video modeling that they need to successfully improve their daily life.
I've also requested adapted mathematics materials such as Math for Life, Money, and Real Life Math books with contain material that contains both visuals and real-world connections to necessary math skills needed in every day life.
Skills such as: washing hair, brushing teeth, paying for items, cooking a meal, increasing communication, traveling in the community, appropriate dress, mopping, and vacuuming are only some of the skills that your donation will provide to my students.
My teenage learners with autism deserve the opportunity to become as independent as possible in ALL areas of their journey through school, the community, and home life.
The materials requested will become the motivating tools I need to both teach and reinforce the skills my students are encouraged to master.
