Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Following a year of pandemic learning, the teachers at my large middle school realized that our students needed more than just a return to academics as normal. We saw that students, more than ever, needed a space where they could discuss the social-emotional aspects of adolescence while learning to build strong, respectful relationships with others. In response, we created a school-wide homeroom curriculum to address these needs every morning in every classroom.
Our 3rd and 4th units this year, across all grades, focus on LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous histories, and this set of books will be distributed to all 6th-grade teachers to be used throughout the unit.
Our Newcomer and Special Education teachers will also be joining us in teaching these units in their classrooms!
These books are perfect for teaching students about concepts such as respecting the pronouns of others, resistance to oppression, and the resilience of indigenous peoples. Each teacher will receive a copy of each title to read aloud during homeroom (unless they already own one) and will have it available as part of their classroom library for students to read again and again.
With this project, you will help me and my colleagues not only build students' understanding of their own and their classmates' identities, but also to develop a love for reading that they will carry throughout their time in middle school. Thank you for helping to support the growing literacies of our middle schoolers!
