My Students
Remember what it feels like to see a picture that is truly more than you can describe? I want to give my students that same opportunity by letting them experience their own creativity and combining that with using visual literacy skills.
For students that have disabilities in reading or writing, text can be overwhelming.
I have 14 students on my caseload, and all of them struggle with written expression. Having a visual cue to look at will aid in creativity, word choice, and perspective. My students attend a public school and I teach students ranging from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Having the skill of visual literacy is something that students can learn even in Kindergarten. As students grow and mature that skill will be needed as they eventually enter the workforce.
My Project
By viewing the world through a shutter lens, students can see art. They can learn to write about that art and dialog with other students about their creation. The students will be able to take their own pictures and later write short stories or descriptions based upon what they have taken. With the printer students can create collages of various experiences, and in turn collaborate with peers.
As our world and society continues to evolve their is an ever growing need for students to have visual literacy.
Students need to have the ability to read images as our world incorporates more and more media and less text. This project provides that very necessary 21st century skill of creativity.
