This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am an English as a new language teacher in a middle school where 70% of our students are English language learners. Something I noticed this year is that students don't have a lot of opportunities to do independent reading during their school day. My goal for next year is to provide time and space in my ENL classes for students to engage with high interest books.

Graphic novels are a great way for students that are not fluent in English to access the language at their pace.

Some students are learning the basics while they are grappling with content. The visuals in these type of books help fill in the gaps as they work on mastering the language.
