Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If a picture tells a thousand words, then how many words will a picture book tell? Many of us can agree that picture books tell amazing stories but they are stories from adults. What would happen if we turned them over to children and had them write the stories?

I teach second grade in a school that has a 90% poverty rate.

We are a urban school with very diverse cultural backgrounds. Our students are coming to school immersed with technology. From televisions, computer games, ipods and various other forms of technology, they forgetting how to be creative.

My Project

Picture books are an amazing way to help children visualize the story in their minds. We show them the pictures as we read the books and they can feel what the author is trying to tell them. I would like to use these books to set a stage so children see what could happen in a book if they were the authors. Allowing them the opportunity to create a story based on just the pictures will tap into their creativity and allow them to go places they can only get to from imagination.

Your donation will help children's imaginations flow like vivid dreams coming onto a page.

Today’s students need to see and visualize with their minds and not be so dependent on having technology think for them. These picture books will invite us to see what they are capable of dreaming. Those dreams will help them become better thinkers and better problem solvers. Let's not close off their imagination let's open it up and see what is there!
