Pictures Are Worth 1,000 Words

Help me give my students the gateway to reading. Graphic novels are engaging and enchanting to children. Often they fall in love with graphic novels and begin a life long love of reading as they discover books!

My Students

On the surface, many may be taken aback by my library's apparent disorder, the lack of desks, the constant movement of students, cardboard everywhere, the constant chatter and the energy level. But, spend more than a cursory look, more than a quick investigation and you will find the future of education.

The movement turns out to be students owning their environment, identifying necessary tools and working to set up their learning conditions to best suit their needs.

The cardboard is indicative of creation, an expression of student ideas and working product. The chatter is purposeful, direct, and focused on deep investigation of subject materials. The energy level shows true engagement by every single child in the classroom.

Our children thrive in self-directed activities with hands-on learning and collaborative play. They make choices in their learning which encourages personal accountability using their teacher as a resource.

My Project

Graphic novels fly off the shelf in a library. They are beloved by all children and adults. They are read and read and read again. They are approachable and "cool" to readers.

Reluctant or struggling readers in particular are not intimidated by the number of pages as the story is told with panels of art.

These readers in particular benefit from this style and often fall into the story without realizing how much they are reading. The contextual clues aid these readers and books become a joy, not a chore. They are full of age appropriate text and pictures. They may nave less text, but are not baby books.
