Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The classroom library has quickly become my students' (and my) favorite space in our room. Thanks to a generous donor earlier in the year, I have been able to fill this space with lots of great graphic novels that my students love to read during independent work time. However, I have found that some of my readers prefer to look at shorter picture books rather than novels.

It is so important that students see themselves reflected in the books available to them through the classroom library.

While I have worked to create a library that includes diverse books, I have found that some groups still lack appropriate representation. I want to continue to create a classroom environment where diversity is acknowledged and embraced and where all my students feel seen and heard. These books will help me to accomplish that goal.

Books like these will both provide my students with mirrors (books that highlight their own experiences) and windows (books that highlight the experiences of others). My hope is that the mirror books will increase student engagement, and the window books will increase empathy and acceptance. I have chosen specific books that will help to address different topics throughout the year. For example, during Thanksgiving time, I realized I do not have any stories that highlight the narratives of Indigenous Americans. If this project is funded, I would use the story "Fry Bread" to introduce students to a culture that they might not be familiar with in a way that embraces rather than overlooks cultural differences. I want my classroom library to better reflect the beautiful diversity present in my students and our school community.

Thank you for considering donating to our class project!

Sincerely,

Ms. Robertson
