My K-8 Charter school is in New York. Our students reflect the cultural crossroads of the neighborhood comprised of mostly second and third generation Latino immigrants, Hasidic, and African American families. I am blessed to teach Art in a school with a richly diverse student population and a wonderfully supportive community. It is unfortunate that many classrooms in this country lag behind with their incorporation of technology into information sharing. Perhaps because schools are not profit driven, the latest technology and technical support is considered a luxury or a secondary concern. Meanwhile our students are at risk. My students are growing up in world that many of us did not, where information gathering is immediate, interest driven, and multi-sensory. For middle school students it is even more important that they are given tangible experiences in the classroom that stimulate their ability to think deeply about problems and gather information from many sources. Due to budget cuts to our states charter school funding, I will also be teaching in our school’s middle school campus for the first time next year. Through the years I have developed my art studio in the lower school into an interactive, multi sensory space, using power points and an interactive system. Unfortunately I can’t take all of the components of the system with me to the middle school. If I had a projector housed in the middle school studio, I could attach it to my laptop. I could show power points and video clips, as well as hook up my interactive system that pulls up images from a library that my students and myself can write on and manipulate with a stylus. The projector is the missing piece. After seeing my student’s interest peek when I use the interactive system, I can’t go back to teaching as usual. My students have shown me what they need to learn. Please consider helping me bring this technology to my students.
